Grants awarded annually

The Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation awards annual grants for scientific research. The foundation awards grants primarily to postdoctoral researchers and for the completion of doctoral theses for doctoral candidates. The open call is annually January to February.

Supported fields of science and research

The purpose of the foundation is to promote scientific research . Grants will not be awarded to medical, health or technical sciences, nor the fields covered by the Magnus Ehrnrooth Foundation, i.e. mathematics, physics and chemistry (including biochemistry and medical chemistry).

The Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation awards grants primarily to postdoctoral researchers and for completion of doctoral theses. Grants will not be awarded for equipment purchases, printing costs or to cover travel expenses.

Grant decisions and payment date

Grant decisions will be made at the latest in May. Grants will be paid out, beginning in June. The names of grant recipients, research topics and amounts of grants are published on the foundation’s website.

Grant decisions are based on scientific peer-review.

Application period and applying

The foundation awards grants annually. The application period is January-February. The applications are made using the electronic form, available on this website. The application form is available from the beginning of January.

The size and duration of the grant

A full-time working grant is 30.000 euros for doctoral researchers and 34.000 euros for postdoctoral researchers. Grants are awarded at most for one year at a time.

Allocation criteria

When applying for a grant, please follow the instructions below. In particular, please note the following general principles:

  • During the awarded working period the grant recipient is not allowed to have another grant or recieve a salary (at least not full-time).

  • Early career researchers are prioritized.

  • Grants are primarily awarded to postdoctoral applicants and doctoral researchers for completion of their theses. 

  • Grants can be awarded for part-time research as well.

  • The foundation does
    not award grants for larger research projects through the open call in January
    to February.

  • A statement of a grant applied for or obtained elsewhere for the same research must be attached.

  • Grants are not awarded for congress travel or for the purchase of equipment and supplies.

  • Grants may be awarded for the same multi-year projects during several years.
