The Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation issues grants for scientific research. The Foundation grants primarily personal grants for post-doctoral researchers and for finalization of PhD dissertations. Please note that the Foundation primarily supports research at Finnish universities or Finnish researchers abroad.

Grants will not be awarded for only equipment purchases, printing costs or to cover travel expenses.

Grants are awarded for all scientific disciplines except: medical research, technical sciences, mathematics, physics and chemistry (including biochemistry and medical chemistry).

A one-year grant for doctoral candidate is 30 000 euros and 34 000 euros for post-doctoral researchers.

The application and all required attachments can be provided in English, Swedish or Finnish.

Young researchers refers to youth as a researcher. In other words someone who is still in the beginning of once career as a researcher. Young doesn’t refer to the biological age of the applicant.

No. The Foundation only processes applications that are sent through the online application system. The application is not required to be sent in by traditional mail.

The grant will generally be paid in one payment. If you want to get the grant in more than one payment, for example to divide it into two taxation years, please contact the Foundation’s director.

The grant will be paid to the bank account provided by the applicant in the electronic application system. You may give your university’s/organisation’s bank account and other information through the system.

Please note that the Foundation doesn’t pay an extra fee for the university’s administration or work space.

Every case is considered individually and there is no set limit (e.g. 25%) that is automatically accepted. In general the research work financed by the grant should be considered one’s main full-time job.

According to general principles, one can’t simultaneously use two grants for the same research project.

All grants for receivers who are subject to taxation in Finland are subject to tax for the amount of all grants exceeding the total annual highest amount of the governmental artist grant.

There are no strict form requirements for the research plan. Please follow general praxis in your research field.

The length of the research plan should not exceed three pages. Bibliography or references do not need to fit on the three pages, and can be extended to following pages.

There is no code or personal link required for submitting a recommendation. Applications and recommendations will be paired based on the applicant’s name.

The grant decisions are made at the latest in June, usually by mid-May and are communicated to all applicants by email. A list of all recipients and their subject of research is also published on the foundation’s website during June.
